“I Stand Here Writing”

College English, April 1993

Sommers’s article inspires readers to find the connections among the various “texts” in our
lives—personal and academic—and encourages us to see that we can, in fact, invent the connections. A daughter of Holocaust survivors and a student of Ralph Waldo Emerson, she comes upon the revelation that as writers we are inventors and sources, and she urges writers to embrace uncertainty and ambiguity as a starting point for writing.
