This morning, CNN ran a news article entitled “Heroin laced with elephant tranquilizer hits the streets.”   This drug cocktail has been blamed for numerous deaths in recent weeks.  The tranquilizer is a compound called carfentanil, and has the structure shown below.   According to the article, just 2 mg of the drug can knock out an elephant.




  1. Based on this structure, what is the molecular formula for this compound?
  2. This compound is slightly basic. Which atom on this molecule is the most basic site?  Why?
  3. Draw the products formed when this compound combines with acetic acid (CH3CO2H).
