Before uploading videos to video assignments, students and instructors should compress their video files. Below are basic instructions for compressing video on Mac and PC.

Mac

Choose one of the following software options.

iMovie

If you are in iMovie, export your video using the lowest quality option. You can also change the video type to .avi or .qt for streaming.

Handbrake

Visit the Handbrake website for more info and download links.

Windows

Choose one of the following software options.

Handbrake

Visit the Handbrake website for more info and download links.

Freemake Video Converter

Visit the Freemake website for more info and download links. View this YouTube tutorial for more info on how to install and use Freemake (students only need to watch from 0:35 - 2:42 and 5:49 - 7:40).

Compress using these settings:

  • File format: .mov or .mp4
  • Codec: H.264
  • Resolution: 640 x 360
  • Bitrate: smaller is better – the drop-down should have choices
