We highly recommend you review Homework Assignment Requirements and Best Practices before beginning to create Homework Assignments.

Time limit, number of attempts, and review settings can be edited in three ways:

Note: The steps in this article will help you edit question settings, not the question itself. For help editing a question please view the help article How do I edit a Homework activity question?.

Warning: Edits to the questions or question settings in a Homework activity cannot be made after a student has submitted an attempt.

This warning does not pertain to new titles released in Fall of 2017 or later, including:
  • Moore, Introduction to the Practice of Statistics, 9e
  • Moore, Statistics: Concepts and Controversies, 9e
  • Sowder, Reconceptualizing Mathematics, 3e

Once a student has submitted an attempt in a Homework assignment, you will be unable to make edits to question settings for that assignment. This includes when you take the Homework assignment as a student in View as Student mode. For this reason, we are recommending a three-course approach as outlined in the help article How can I review Homework activities as a student?. If you need a question's content, including tolerances for answers, edited after the assignment has been locked, see the instructions in the following help articles:

Open the Homework assignment

On the LaunchPad home page, click on the Homework assignment to open it.

Edit attempts and points

Note: If you do not see a number of attempts and pts to the right of the question, you may be using a newer version of LaunchPad. Jump to For newer LaunchPads.

If you need to edit the number of attempts allowed on a question or the number of points that question is worth, you can do so from this page. Click on the number you would like to change in the attempts or pts column, and edit it there.

Click the check box next to the question you want to edit

There are three other settings you can edit beyond number of attempts and number of points:
  • Which attempt submitted by a student will report to the gradebook as part of his/her final score
  • Time limit to answer each question
  • Feedback review settings

To edit one or more of these settings, begin by selecting the question you'd like to edit using the checkbox at the left.

Click "Edit question settings"

Note: Do not click Edit next to the question or Edit questions (outlined in black below). These options are there if you want to edit the text of the question and not the question settings.

Edit the settings from the "Edit Question Settings" screen

You can change the following settings on a question by question basis:

  • Points possible
  • Number of attempts per question
  • Which attempt submitted by a student will report to the gradebook as part of his/her final score
  • Time limit to answer each question
  • Feedback review settings

Be sure to click Save when you're done editing the settings.

View edited settings

From the activity information page you can now see the updated question settings.

The settings for all the other questions remain the same.

For newer LaunchPads

If you are using a new title released in Fall of 2017 or later, you will follow slightly different instructions to edit your Homework question settings. These titles include:
  • Moore, Introduction to the Practice of Statistics, 9e
  • Moore, Statistics: Concepts and Controversies, 9e
  • Sowder, Reconceptualizing Mathematics, 3e

Edit your Homework assignment

Click the Edit button at the top right of your Homework assignment.

Select question to edit

You will be taken to the Review & Modify tab. Check the box for the question you want to edit, then click Edit Question Settings.

Edit the settings from the "Edit Question Settings" screen

You can change the following settings on a question by question basis:

  • Points possible
  • Number of attempts per question
  • Which attempt submitted by a student will report to the gradebook as part of his/her final score
  • Time limit to answer each question
  • Feedback review settings

Be sure to click Save when you're done editing the settings.

View edited settings

The only setting you will be able to view after saving is the points possible per question. This number is at the upper left of each question. To view all other settings, you must edit the settings for the question again and view the settings in the Edit Question Settings window.
