LaunchPad contains resources for you and your students. In this tutorial, we'll take a detailed look at both types separately. Let's begin with student resources. Click the following link to go to the landing page of LaunchPad for Joining the Conversation.

What resources are available for my students?

From your LaunchPad home page, click Resources, then Content by Type. You'll see a list of all the resources available to your students. We'll now take a closer look at each.

This is the online version of the textbook, organized by chapter. The e-Book provides all of the print book content, including all reading selections, Genre Talk, activities, and pedagogical tools. Click on any of the Working Together or Your Turn activities to download a worksheet of the questions.

Genre Talk Quiz (Multimodal Reading Activity)

LaunchPad expands the print book’s Genre Talk feature into a hybrid activity, with additional multimodal models and a self-assessment quiz. Students examine documents on provocative topics, such as child slavery in the cocoa industry or the global immigration crisis, and complete an auto-graded quiz to test their understanding of purpose, genre, design, and context.

LearningCurve’s game-like adaptive quizzing covers grammar, mechanics, style, and argument. LearningCurve provides a unique learning path for each student, with quizzes shaped by each individual’s correct and incorrect answers. The less a student knows about a topic, the more LearningCurve focuses on it. And the better a student does, the more difficult the questions become. Feedback for each question includes links to more information about the topic, giving students more support in the areas that are giving them difficulty.

Diagnostics (Skill Inventory)

Eight diagnostics are available to help track student proficiency with specific reading and writing skills. A comprehensive pre-test and post-test in each of four subjects—Sentence Grammar; Style, Punctuation, and Mechanics; Reading Skills; and Reading Strategies—allow instructors to check students’ progress.

Reading Quizzes

LaunchPad offers two assignable quizzes for each reading: the Starting a Conversation discussion questions from the book are useful for discussion, and multiple-choice reading comprehension quizzes help check student comprehension of each selection.

Tutorials help students learn crucial skills, like critical reading and analyzing visuals.

Video Activities

The LaunchPad includes eight Bedford videos on a number of relevant topics, including MLA-style citations, APA-style citations, creating presentations, and tools for keeping track of sources. Videos are accompanied by assignable response questions.

What resources are available for instructors?

From the same screen where you've been viewing student resources, you can scroll down to see those available to instructors. Let's now take a closer look at each.

Instructor's Manual

“Teaching with Joining the Conversation” contains a wealth of resources for instructors, including a correlation between the book and the WPA outcomes, a sample syllabus, classroom activities, teaching tips, and responses to the “Starting a Conversation” discussion questions that follow each reading in the book. Sections on teaching strategies and establishing the ethos of conversation helps instructors set the stage for the book’s approach.
