LaunchPad contains a wealth of resources for both you and your students. In this overview, we'll take a detailed look at each of these resources. Click the following link to visit the login page for Life 11e LaunchPad. Let's begin with student resources.

What resources are available for my students?

From your LaunchPad home page, click Resources, then Content by Type. You'll see a list of all the categories of resources available to your students. We'll now take a closer look at each.

Active Learning Modules

New for the Eleventh Edition of Life, the Active Learning Modules (ALMs) are designed to support the teaching of key topics using active learning techniques. Each module includes the following student resources. Jump to instructor resources.
  • Instructions and Pre-Class Work: Refers the student to the relevant textbook chapters, sections, and media resources to read and review before the in-class exercise.
  • Pre-Class Video: A lecture-style animated treatment of the core material relevant to the Module.
  • Pre-Quiz: A brief assignable pre-class quiz.
  • Handout: Diagrams, data, or other information to be used during the in-class exercise.
  • Post-Quiz: A brief assignable post-class quiz.

A range of interactive activities help students explore, learn, and review key facts, concepts, and processes. Activities include labeling diagrams of important structures, identifying steps in key processes, and running simulations of biological systems.

In-depth animations present complex topics, systems, and processes in a clear, easy-to-follow narrative. Each includes an introduction, the animation, a conclusion, and a brief assignable quiz based on the material covered in the animation.

LaunchPad’s e-Book offers the complete textbook with all of the interactive study tools specific to the book and the course linked in at point of use—plus easy customization and personalization for students and instructors. Students can search and highlight, making it easier to access key content and organize studying. Instructors can customize and rearrange chapters and sections and add links to their own resources and/or other publisher-provided content.

A comprehensive set of flashcards for each chapter provides students an ideal way to learn and review the extensive terminology of introductory biology. The flashcards feature multiple modes, including stack mode, table mode (shown here), and quiz mode.

Developed in light of the latest advances in learning research, LearningCurve’s game-like adaptive quizzing is available for every chapter of the text. LearningCurve provides a unique learning path for each student, with quizzes shaped by each individual’s correct and incorrect answers. The less a student knows about a topic, the more LearningCurve focuses on it. The better a student does, the more difficult the questions become. Hints and links to relevant e-Book pages guide students to review the material that is giving them difficulty. Because LearningCurve is a formative assessment and not a graded assignment (students work towards a target score, answering as many question as needed to reach it), many instructors have found it to be an ideal source for pre-lecture assignments, with students coming to class more prepared to participate.

Math for Life

A collection of mathematical shortcuts and references to help students with the quantitative skills they need in the biology laboratory.

Media Clips

These short, engaging video clips depict fascinating examples of some of the many organisms, processes, and phenomena discussed in the textbook.

Summative Quizzes

These pre-built quizzes assess overall student understanding of each chapter, and provide instructors with data on class and individual comprehension of chapter material. Summative quizzes can be easily assigned as pre- or post-lecture assessments or released for student self-assessment use.

Tree of Life

This interactive version of the Tree of Life from Appendix A links to a wealth of information on each phylogenetic group via the online database.

Work with the Data Companion Exercises

LaunchPad includes an online companion exercise for each Work with the Data exercise in the textbook. Students can practice and learn skills by completing the in-text exercises, and then go to LaunchPad to complete online versions that can be assigned by the instructor.

What resources are available for instructors?

From your LaunchPad home page, click Resources, then Content by Type. Scroll down to the Instructor resources heading, where you will see the full list of instructor resource categories available to you. Now let's take a closer look at each.

Active Learning Exercises

Set up for easy integration into lectures, these short in-class exercises are sets of PowerPoint slides that pose questions or problems for the class to discuss or solve. Each also includes a multiple-choice element, for easy use with clicker systems.

Active Learning Guide

New for the Eleventh Edition, the Active Learning Guide provides extensive resources and support for implementing active learning techniques in the classroom. The Guide offers instructors a thorough introduction to the concepts, techniques, and benefits of active learning, along with chapter-by-chapter guidance on teaching using the many active learning resources provided with Life, as well as a wealth of additional suggestions and resources.

Active Learning Modules

Also new for the Eleventh Edition, the Active Learning Modules (ALMs) are designed to support the teaching of key topics using active learning techniques. Each module includes the following instructor resources. Jump to student resources.
  • Instructor Guide: A complete guide to the module, including an overview, the preparation required, the background material for students, common misconceptions about the topic, and detailed instructions for using the in-class exercise.
  • In-Class Exercise: Designed to take an entire class period, these exercises involve your students in answering questions, solving problems, and analyzing data. Each exercise is provided as a set of PowerPoint slides, so they are all fully editable.
  • Assessment Items: Several test questions specific to the material covered in the ALM are provided.
  • Handout (editable version): A Microsoft Word version of each handout.

Figure and Table Images

Every figure and table from the textbook (including all photos and all unnumbered figures) is provided in JPEG format, in a variety of versions, including whole, reformatted, and unlabeled.

Figure and Table Slides

All versions of all figure and table images are included in ready-to-use PowerPoint slides. Each slide includes the figure number and title, as well as the complete figure caption, in the Notes field.

Instructor's Manual

The Life Instructor’s Manual includes the following sections for each chapter of the textbook: Chapter Overview, What’s New, Chapter Outline, Chapter Opener Resources (Discussion Questions and Online Resources), and Key Terms.

Layered Art (PPT)

Layered, step-by-step, and animated versions of selected complex figures allow you to present these figures in a more flexible, paced manner.

Learning Outcomes

New for the Eleventh Edition, the learning outcomes are the core of the book’s learning standards (Key Concepts, Focus Your Learning statements, and Learning Outcomes). Instructors are provided with a complete spreadsheet of each chapter's learning outcomes.

Lecture Presentations (PPT)

A complete lecture presentation is provided for each chapter, in PowerPoint format. Each presentation includes coverage of all of the key information presented in the chapter, along with selected figures and tables.

Test Bank

LaunchPad makes it easy to build custom assessments from Life’s extensive collections of assessment items. The Test Bank includes over 6,000 questions, all referenced to specific textbook key concepts, Bloom’s Taxonomy levels, and learning outcomes. Each chapter includes a wide range of multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, and short-answer/essay questions. In addition, questions from all of the LearningCurve banks and Summative Quizzes are included as additional question banks that instructors can draw upon in building quizzes and other assignments. The Test Bank is available in multiple formats:
  • LaunchPad Question Banks (shown below): When creating or editing assessments, go to Search Questions to access the question picker, which allows you to search for and filter questions using a variety of metadata.
  • Word Documents: Available for download by chapter from the Resources panel.
  • Diploma Test-Creation Software: Installers are available for download via the book's catalog page.
