What’s a Video Assessment Program activity?

A video assessment activity is set up by your instructor and is where you will submit video assignments. When you enter your LaunchPad, your assigned activities will be visible at the top of the page in blue. For each activity, you will see additional information such as due date, type of activity, and possible points.

To open an activity, click the bar for the assignment you want to complete.

When you open a Video Assessment activity, you will see a large red button that reads Add Video. Click the button to select your video.

You will be given options for how you want to submit your media. You can title your submission using the Title field. Your name will be added automatically to the Presenters field.

You can add presentation slides by clicking Add PDF Slides (also known as Slide Sync).

Here you can upload your presentation as a PDF file.

Click Upload or Record to add a video. If you click Upload, you will be given two choices:
  1. The default tab is Upload, which will allow you to upload a video file from your device.

  1. Click the YouTube tab to embed a video from YouTube.

After you submit your video, you will see it in the activity window.

The four activity types

Video Assessment Program has four different activity types.


Self-Submit

This activity type is simply a self-recorded video that you submit for feedback from your instructor. You can either record directly in LaunchPad using the Record button or record outside of LaunchPad and upload your video using the Upload button. 

Example: You upload or record, then submit your own video (including attachments and timed visual aids) for instructor and peer feedback.


User-added image Live Event

This type of activity is used to give simultaneous feedback during a presentation/recording. Any reviewers (including peers, if enabled) may simultaneously give real-time feedback on live instructor-led recordings or on recording sessions initiated by you. This type is commonly used for communication and public speaking activities.


 Stimulus

This type of activity is used when the instructor wants you to record a video response to a video. The recorded response will be synchronized to the stimulus media. Every time you pause or replay the stimulus, those events will be captured on the recording. You cannot use the Upload button on this activity type because you are required to Record alongside the stimulus. This activity type is commonly used in interpreting and other language activities, for mock interviews, and other prompt-oriented responses.


 Comment Only

This activity type is used when teachers want you to provide only comments on a stimulus/prompt media they provide. These comments can be composed of text, audio, or video. There are also specific feedback options unique to this activity type:
  • Group Discussion allows you to have a conversation about the stimulus/prompt media, seeing all comments from everyone. If not enabled, comments remain private as usual.
  • Individual Graded Response allows the instructor to score each student individually on your comments. Using this option will result in an individual video session appearing on your dashboard.


Note: To participate in a Comment Only activity, you do not click Create Video. Instead, you will see a video session on your dashboard that you will simply play to open a commenting session on the stimulus/prompt media. In addition, this activity type cannot be marked with the Test option explained below.


Activity Settings

Your instructor sets the requirements for your activity. The options include:

 Peer Critique, which allows all students to give feedback on each other’s recordings. When critiquing a peer, you can only see your own comments unless All comments are public is enabled.

 All Comments are Public, which allows everyone in the course to see all timeline feedback, including comments, markers, and ratings. If unchecked, only the instructors and the video's presenter(s) can see these items.

 Slide Sync, which allows you to add PDF slides to your assignment in LaunchPad. You can set the timing for each slide transition and rearrange slides as needed. 

 Use Ratings, which allows presenters and instructors to provide a "thumbs up/thumbs down" type of rating as they watch a presenter's video.

 Instructor Rubric, which means there is a structured evaluation on the Activity. 

 Markers, which are a set of labels that instructors create for marking up a video in addition to comments. These are time-coded into the video within the comment stream. 

 Group Discussion, which allows all participants to see each other’s comments. (Note: This option is only available for the Stimulus activity type.)

 Individual Graded Response, which allows the instructor to grade each participant individually, whether the video assessment program activity is a group discussion or individual responses. (Note: This option is only available for the Stimulus activity type.)

 Test option, which, once enabled, enforces the following:
  1. Only one submission is allowed per student, and only one recording attempt is allowed.
  2. You cannot delete your submission from the Dashboard, only your instructor can.
  3. Stimulus media (if applicable) may not be previewed.
  4. If a time limit is entered, your recording will end automatically when the time limit is reached.
  5. Instructors can reset your test by deleting your video submission from the Dashboard using the Edit menu (three dots on the right of the submission). This will allow a new submission.


Activity resources

Your instructor can add additional resources to support the activity. If resources are added, you can access them by clicking on the Activity Information button (#2 below), or using the Activity Information button located on the top left of your recording screen.
  1. Activity Type - In this example, Presenter Self-Record is the Activity Type
  2. Activity Information (represented by an i icon) - Allows you to preview activity resources, rubric, and instructions
  3. Activity Settings - Dark icons represent the settings that are enabled on the activity, grayed out icons are not enabled
