ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM
Deborah Licht and Misty Hull provide expert advice on connecting intro psych content to everyday life, how to incorporate skill practice to complement knowledge- based content and prepare students for the workplace, and how to use assessment tools to ensure inclusion of skills-oriented goals outlined by the APA’s Guidelines 2.0.
The skills and knowledge gained from the study of psychology are vital to students on any career path. By learning about critical thinking and statistical reasoning, students become scientifically literate citizens and better consumers of scientific information. They may also show improvements in written and oral communication, cultural sensitivity and understanding, and professional development skills. This is especially true if goals and outcomes from the new APA guidelines are employed in their course(s). Instructors can calibrate their courses to facilitate the development of these important skills. They can also make sure students truly understand how psychology coursework can prepare them for future careers, both in and outside psychology.
