ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM
In this interactive seminar, Dr. Wendy Bass talks about ways to make Internet-based courses more engaging—assessments, content sharing, discussion boards, custom videos, and more—all aimed at getting students to not only interact with the instructor but with each other as well. Drawing on her own experiences, Dr. Bass emphasizes the importance of staying true to your original goals for the course while adaptive to the advantages and disadvantages of teaching remotely. Dr. Bass will also highlight ways to take advantage of media-based resources typically provided to accompany a textbook.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Dr. Wendy Bass is the Distance Education Coordinator and Project Director of Title V grant at Pierce College in Woodland Hills, California. She obtained her Ph.D. in education from the University of California-Los Angeles. Her early research and publications explore early literacy, identifying and supporting children with special needs, and the importance of parent and professional support in helping children with cancer return to school.
Dr. Bass has been a passionate instructor of both traditional and online courses in psychology and education since 1998, teaching in both 2-year and 4-year schools in California. As Pierce College's Distance Education Coordinator, Dr. Bass teaches online courses while establishing campus-wide pedagogical standards and operational procedures for online instruction. She is co-chair of the LACCD Technology Policy and Planning Committee and serves on the college's Educational Technology and Accreditation Steering Committees, as well as in the Academic Senate. Prior to coming to Pierce, Dr. Bass was the Distance Education Coordinator and a professor in child development at East Los Angeles College (ELAC). Dr. Bass has also been an eTudes trainer and export for four years. She has taught over twenty Etudes training courses at both ELAC and Etudes.org. In addition to teaching the introduction to Etudes, she has developed and taught an online pedagogy course for ELAC faculty. Wendy is also a lead instructor for Cyber Teacher's Institute for Etudes.
Dr. Bass is a frequent presenter and expert panelist. She has presented at numerous national conferences on "Best Practices in Teaching Online," "How to Engage Online Learners," and "Encouraging Critical Thinking in Online Child Development Courses."
