In this presentation, we will cover the use of illustrations in teaching the topics covered in a typical Human Communication course, including perception, verbal/nonverbal communication, communication and culture, listening, interpersonal communication, group communication, and public speaking.
- Joseph Tuman
Professor and former chair of the Department of Communication Studies at San Francisco State UniversityJoseph S. Tuman is a professor and former chair of the Department of Communication Studies at San Francisco State University, where he has received the Jacobus tenBroek Society Award for Excellence in Teaching. Dr. Tuman has taught at the University of California at Berkeley, the New School, and University of Paris II, and has published widely in the field of communication studies. He has served as a legal consultant on free speech issues for the National Communication Association, and as a communications consultant on social media and terrorism for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). He appears regularly on television news programs as a political commentator, and was one of the leading candidates in the last election for the Mayorship of Oakland, CA.
- Kathy Adams
Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication at CSU FresnoKatherine L. Adams has been a professor of communication for over thirty years at California State University Fresno, where she formerly served as chair of the Department of Communication and currently chairs the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism. Her primary teaching responsibilities include undergraduate and graduate courses in communication theory, interpersonal communication, and small group communication. She also helped create an honors public speaking course and taught in the Smittcamp Family Honors College. A former graduate of the University of Utah, she published her first interpersonal textbook with her mentor and noted small group communication scholar B. Aubrey Fisher. She continued on to publish two textbooks in small group communication. She has held all the major offices in the Western States Communication Association, including its past presidency. She has also completed four AIDS/LifeCycle events to help raise money for the fight against AIDS.
- Douglas Fraleigh
Professor and chair of the Department of Communication at California State UniverDouglas M. Fraleigh is a professor and chair of the Department of Communication at California State University, Fresno and he serves on the faculty of the university's Smittcamp Family Honors College. He has taught public speaking courses throughout his career and also coached intercollegiate speech and debate at CSU Fresno, UC Berkeley, Cornell, and CSU Sacramento. His research interests include freedom of speech, argumentation, and legal communication.
